A challenging hike οn the east side of the White Mountains that will reward your effort with breathtaking views!
The peak of Kastro (2219m) appears as you drive up towards our starting point, Niato plateau. Kastro is the highest peak of the eastern side of the White Mountains. The hiking will take place on the beautiful ridge that leads to the summit of Kastro. The highlight of Kastro’s summit is the 360 degree view of Crete’s natural landmarks. From the east side, you see Psiloritis mountain, Askyfou plateau and the mainland of Crete. To the south you get a view of the Libyan sea and the islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula. Looking west, you see the White Mountains including the peaks of Kakovoloi, Pachnes and Sorous. Last, the northerly view includes the northern coastline of Crete.
Getting there:
• You will have to reach the entrance of the gorge with your own car. However, please bare in mind that you need a 4×4 car.
