Overview

Are you ready to discover the desert of the White Mountains? We are talking about Pachnes which is the highest peak (2453m). The hiking trail begins at the altitude of approximately 1900m after following a dirt road to Roussies. From that point it takes roughly 2 hours of hiking to experience the stunning views from the summit of Pachnes. Beyond the many peaks of the White Mountains you can also see Psiloritis, the bay of Messara, Frangokastello as well as the islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula.

Despite being a desert, there is quite a bit of plant life in the area. In fact, out of the roughly 190 Cretan endemic flowers around 30 of them grow exclusively in the White Mountains.
